Xbox 360’s firmware hacked

Xbox 360 would be almost impossible for hackers to master according to Microsoft, now four months later a hacker known as “TheSpecialist” reports that a team of hackers has managed to install a self-made firmware giving them full and total control over the DVD player and what discs it should accept. In other words allowing illegal material. TheSpecialist, that has designed firmware hacks earlier, says that Microsoft has been very careless with the firmware handling inside Xbox 360 thus making this hack possible. At the same time he admits that it has done a great job with protecting the console against hackers and is doubtful that we will see any similar hack for allowing unsigned code to be executed arrive anytime soon.

“An important detail however is that the system will not run any unsigned code itself. As such it is impossible to flash the firmware by software, and you will need to have a hardware programmer to reprogram the firmware. Obviously this disqualifies the hack for any general usage.”

So, even though they’ve managed to break into Xbox 360’s firmware there is no expectations of a commercial solution anytime soon, similar to the first generation Xbox where chiping has become a big industry. The group that designed the new firmware hack has not revealed any further information about the hack, mainly because of pure hacker ethics, but also in fear of Microsoft.
