Xbox 360’s guide lines states that the games made for the console will run at 720p HD resolution and with some form of antialiasing, at least 2xAA. Sony has proudly boasted support for full HDTV resolution, 1080p, which should result in tremendous image quality, with the few systems that can handle such a resolution. Now Scott Henson at Microsoft has gone one step further by sharing his view on the discussions that has surfaced due to the fact that few PS3 games actually use “full HDTV resolution. Scott Henson has in an interview with Kikizo said that 1080p is more or less impossible today and the no developer actually has a game that performs the way it should at 1080p. Whether this is correct or not is hard to tell, but you do need whole lot more power with 1080p than 720p.
If Sony won’t be able to deliver 1080p games it is much more than a publicity problem. Very few TVs actually support true 1080p resolution today and even if they will become more common until PS3 arrives, many will most likely be very happy with just 720p.
