Western Digital RE2 500 is the latest harddrive from WD and the new drive is a part of its RAID Editon series, intended for very demanding use. RE2 500 has a storage capacity at 500GB just as the sibling WD 500GB SE16, but the latter is intended for the consumer market. Both harddrives are working at 7200 RPM and sport NCQ, 16MB cache and SATA-300 transfer rates. The thing separating the two is that RE2 500 comes with a considerably better warranty, 5 years compared to the SE16 version’s thee years and has been developed to handle constant load and 1.2 million hours MTBF (mean time between failure), which appears to be marketleading.

“WD RE2 hard drives are designed for network attached storage, direct attached server storage and video surveillance environments that require 100 percent duty cycle and carry a 5-year limited warranty.”

Western Digital RE2 500 could be a good choice for those who are going for a file server or something similar, where you need reliability above anything else. The recommended price of RE2 500 is $349, a bit more than the $319 you have to pay for the 500GB SE16 model.
