The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion has been a great success and the game is being hyped for its story and gameplay, but also because of its impressive graphical effects. We’ve earlier reported about the first benchmarks with Oblivion and now the video card manufacturers have started to realize how big this game is. ATI has namely released a beta driver that makes it possible for Oblivion to activate both HDR (High Dynamic Rendering) and antialiasing. This is something the game developers said would be impossible and it was to begin with, but one of ATI’s 3D developers managed to create a solution for the Radeon X1000 family. The 3D developer’s name is Chuck and therefore the new patch is called the “Chuck patch” for Oblivion.

Except from that you can activate both HDR and AA in Oblivion the new drivers support AFR Crossfire mode which can result in up to 80% better performance.

“It’s called the “Chuck patch” in honor of our guy that found a way of enabling this functionality. Of course the reason why this is so important is Oblivion is one of the best looking games available in the market. Enabling High Dynamic Range and Anti Aliasing effects make this game look even better. Needless to say only ATI can support that configuration. So the Catalyst team is giving a special present to owners of ATI cards, an image quality experience unrivaled by any other.”

ATI’s new drivers, that should be able to offer really nice image quality with Oblivion, can be found at ATI’s homepage.

Feel free to share your experience of the patch in the forum.
