Socket AM2 is a very important launch to AMD as it will move over to using DDR2 while it is well aware of that Intel has an interesting architecture coming; Core. There have been a lot of fuss going around about Socket AM2’s performance, that to begin with was hardly something to brag about according to those who got the chance to test the platform. AMD has been working hard with optimizing both the processors’ integrated memory controller and the platform’s overall performance. We’ve seen several versions of Socket AM2 since the beginning of April and at Anandtech they’ve now published an article that target the performance of Socket AM2 today. A platform that is getting reay to be launched and should be able to offer an inidcation for what we should be able to expect from the final platform.
Socket AM2 offers better performance than Socket 939 of today with most tests, but the differences are hardly staggering and the more you analyze the effect of the higher memory bandwidth with AMD’s Athlon 64 processors you realize that you shouldn’t expect any miracles. The article at Anandtech is very intersting as it should be able to predict the final performance of the platform, while at the same time it leaves us wondering how competitive AMD’s processors will be against Intel’s Core architecture. For the first time it seems that the K8 architecture has a worthy opponent.
