Small preview imageIt’s benn known for long that TDK is working on Blu-ray media with 200GB capacity by using 8 layer at 25GB each. Just as it used 2 layers to create its 50GB media and will use 4 layers for its 100GB media that will be launched next year. It seems it wasn’t as easy as one first thought to once again double the amount of layers so when TDK now announces that it has reached 200GB it is not by using 8 25GB layers but with 6 33GB layers. The fact that BD media and units that handle it has been developed for 25GB data layers makes it uncertain whether a BD compatible unit would be able to handle these monster discs. TDK’s 200GB design isn’t covered by the specifications for the Blu-ray Disc format which makes it highly doubtful as a commercial product.

“Providing the same capacity but with fewer layers means each layer must hold more data that a single-layer BD can. Indeed, TDK said it upped the capacity to 33GB – 32 per cent more than a standard BD data-carrying layer can. According to the report, it uses bismuth peroxide as the recording medium – heat it sufficiently with laser light and it forms bubbles of air. These reflect light differently than the surrounding material does, so can be used to record digital information in the way a CD or DVD’s pits do.”
