Dell recently published its figures for the first fiscal quarters of 2007, but these were not what that most people were talking about after reading Dell’s press release. In the same press release was namely information that revealed that Dell will for the first time ever launch computer systems based on AMD processors. Under the headline Product Leadership it has written that it is planning on launching servers based on Intel’s Woodcrest micro processors. But directly beneath that you can read the following; “Dell will also introduce new AMD Opteron processors in our multi-processor servers by the end of the year offering a great new technology to our customers at the high-end of our server line.”
This is an historical event as Dell has always been faithful to Intel, despite Intel’s last years that has been far from as impressive as AMD’s when it comes to the performance. Dell has truly been the last company for AMD to sway when attempting to gain on Intel and its market shares and now the time has come. Dell has been putting up with Intel heat issues and high power consumption for long and that it has chosen to introduce AMD’s processors as Intel is about to launch its most interesting processors in many, many years seems a bit confusing though. Anyhow, it has plans to launch servers based on AMD’s Opteron processors, but exactly when these systems will appear and what plans it has for its PC systems remains uncertain.
