Intel‘s VP Paul Otellini has apparently shared some of his personal opinions in an internal memo among Intel’s employees after Dell revealed its decision to start using AMD’s Opteron platform for server systems. Not unexpected, Intel was rather upset, as it has perhaps not lost, but now has to share it biggest ally with its biggest competitor. In the internal memo Otellini has both complained over Dell’s “incredibly disappointing announcement”, but at the same time stated that this was expected and that it really shows that today’s market is tighter than ever before and that you have to work hard to stay on top.

“Certainly the MP niche has been a challenging one for us. On one hand, I am very confident in our new Core microarchitecture and our ability to deliver a strong product roadmap and high quality of support for Dell and its customers such that they desire Intel platforms in the desktop, mobile and dual processor server markets. On the other hand, this is a clear wake up call for us to improve our competitiveness in the MP server segment. It says we cannot take anything for granted. We have to continue to earn our success each and every day.”

Intel can hardly be blaimed for being disappointed over Dell’s decision, even if it would be a rightful decision to also produce servers based on AMD’s platform it is still a big drawback for Intel.
