LG isn’t just one of the first manufacturers to release a Blu-ray burner on to the market but also does it with a higher specified burn speed than the competition. LG GBW-H10N is namely specified at 4x burn speed where most other first generation Blu-ray burners are specified at 2x speed. The difference in time is quite significant considering that 2x Blu-ray burning equals a transfer rate at 72Mbps while 4x speed doubles this to 144Mbps. A 50GB BD-R disc will take about 94 minutes to burn at 2x speed, while at 4x speed it will only take 47 minutes.

We assume that more manufacturers will follow in LG’s footsteps as these “small” steps make a significant difference in time. If there is anything that is a bigger problem than the amount of time it takes to burn a disc it the price of the disc, but also the burner. LG is expected to launch GBW-H10N in June at €799 which means that it will still be an expensive adventure to invest in Blu-ray the upcoming period of time.
