Toshiba says it has now reached a milestone for making mechanical harddrives as it has managed to achieve a higher storage density than anyone has ever managed before. By using perpendicular recording they’ve developed harddrive platters that can store 178.8 gigabit per square inch, throguh which it has created a 2.5″ harddrive with a 200GB capacity. The same sort of technology Seagate has used with its Barracuda 7200.10 series where the top model has a capacity of a whopping 750GB. Toshiba hopes to start a mass production of its MK2035GSS hardrive in August of 2006, which means that we should be able to expect laptops with considerably larger storage capacities before the end of the year.
