BlueGene/L undisputed king of the Super computer hill

IBM’s supercomputer BlueGene/L continues to crush the opponents on the supercomputer market and now that the 27th list covering the Top500 SuperComputers has been launched it’s BlueGene/L at the top, once again. The new list that was released on June 28 and there we find the BlueGene/L system which is installed at DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California. BlueGene/L is a cooperation between IBM and DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). BlueGene/L has now reached a Linpack performance of mighty 280.6 TFlop/s and is still the only super computer over 100 TFlop/s. BlueGene/L uses 131072 processors and a system memory of neat 3278GB.




Number two on the Top500 list also uses IBM’s Blue Gene Solution platform and is installed at Thomas J, Watson Research Center. The super computer is called BGW and has a Linpack performance of 91.3 TFlop/s and use 40960 processors.


The fastest super computer in Europe can be found in France in the form of Tera-10, which uses 8704 Intel Itanium2 processors and offers a Linpack performance of 42.9 TFlop/s, fifth overall on the Top500 list.


Intel processors can be found in 301 of the 500 systems on the list and 118 of these use Intel’s 64-bit technology, EM64T. Second most frequenty occuring is IBM, 84 systems, just before AMD Opteron which can be found in 81 systems.
