Microsoft has been quite heavily critisized for its Windows Genuine Advantage program, mainly because of the lack of information about the program and what it does behind the curtains. Now it has even gone so far that a person has sued Microsoft since it has installed the program without giving the people a reaslistic choice whether they want it or not. The lawsuit calls WGA spyware and is compared to Sony’s rootkit. Microsoft denies all charges and says that the user is informed that WGA will be installed that it is not a spyware is it is not a program with a malcontent purpose.

WGA can hardly be associated with spyware as the purpose is the ensure that a authentic Windows license is installed and not to e.g. destroy data or spread any personal information about the user. That Microsoft could’ve handled this in a much better manner is a whole different story.

“The WGA program was carefully developed to focus on what is really an industrywide problem in a manner that is lawful, and provides customers with the confidence and assurance that they’re running legitimate software,”
