Qimonda has in a press release revealed that it is the first memory manufacturer to have delivered DDR3 SO-DIMM memory modules and it has done so to graphisc card manufacturer ATI. SO-DIMM modules (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module) are used with portable computers as they are considerably smaller than regular memory modules and the DDR3 technology is the technology of the next generation and is expected to appear in 2007. According to Qimonda it’s ATI’s next generation notebook platform that will be evaluated with DDR3 memory and the first laptops with Qimonda’s DDR3 SO-DIMM modules are expected to appear in precisely 2007.

AMD recently moved on to the DDR2 technology, but we’ve already received reports that its K8L architecture supports DDR3 memory. Exactly when the first DDR3-based platforms will appear is uncertain, but it really seems the technology is starting to gain some momentum. Worth mentioning is that Qimonda, which was founded in April by the memory manufacturer Infineon Technologies, has already come a long way.
