Earlier we’ve reported about Microsoft’s plans to strike against Apple’s dominance on the MP3 player market but also its tightly associated service iTunes and its Music Store. Microsoft has said it wants a broader product that has more to offer than just music and video, e.g. game, which resulted in rumors of a portable Xbox. Now it seems it has turned around and instead strike directly against the source of “evil” and goes for multimedia player that will offer a larger screen, but also chat support (pressumably Microsoft’s own MSN Messenger?).

“Connected Entertainment”

That is the slogan it will apparently use and with WiFi support you will be able to both chat and send media to the player. The launch is suppose to happen in November, the same time as both Nintendo Revolution and Sony Playstation 3 will be launched, perhaps not the smartest date, but this may very well change.

To top it all of MS will let people who’ve downloaded songs from iTMS download the same songs for free from its service. There is no doubt that Microsoft is trying to take down Apple, but the question is if it will really succeed.

By the very little you can judge from the picture at Engadget the design seems a bit doubtful, but it seems to carry a rather interesting control pad instead.
