RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has been trying to use scare tactics against filesharers by suing them for extremes sums of money when doing illegal filesharing. Now the organization has bumped into a minor setback as it lost against a single mother from Oklahoma begin accused of filesharing. The tragic about this is that RIAA demanded Debbie Foster to pay 5000 dollar, which would make them drop all charges. First of all Debbie didn’t have this kind of money but since she didn’t even own a computer the whole accusation has been widely questioned. It was only her name that appeared on the broadband bill that was used during the download.
It all ended with RIAA trying to settle with Debbie Foster and her lawyers when they realized how bad the case was looking. This was not accepted by the defence as it would’ve meant that Debbie herself would’ve had to pay for her lawyers. Now the court has decided to drop all charges and charge RIAA to pay all fees, a great win for Debbie Foster and a small step forward for all others being wrongfully accused.
