A few days ago we reported about Dell’s intiative to launch its new XPS 700 system with an overclocked Conroe processor, Core 2 Extreme X6800. This information was strengthened by a specification picture of a demonstration at Dell where an overclocked XPS 700 was displayed with the text: “System specs like this available within the next 30 days..” When Cnet.com got its XPS 700 system delivered for testing it turned out everything was running at default speeds, something that made them contact Dell to get a final answer to the question whether Dell will ship its XPS 700 systems with overclocked processors or not. The answer was as follows;
“Recent demonstrations of the XPS 700 at the recent World Series of Video Games Summer Tournament used an Intel Core 2 Extreme processor overclocked by Dell engineers to show the potential performance that build-your-own enthusiasts can achieve when the processor becomes available. Dell has unlocked the BIOS so that customers can overclock the processor themselves, but at this time Dell is not factory overclocking the system.”
Dell has thus only made it possible for users to overclock the system themselves by unlocking the BIOS, something we see as a great step forward for Dell, but a tiny one for the market.
