Ultrafast transistors at 110Ghz breaks the world record

The previous world record holder, Philips with its 70 GHz, now has to consider itself beaten by British scientists at the University of Southampton that has been able to increase the speed to 110GHz by adding fluor to the bipolar silicon transistors. Professor Peter Ashburn says that this is a very cheap method as they use standard technology and just adds another step.

Even if they’ve managed to make single transistors to work at 110 GHz you can only get entire circuits work at about 1/10 of that speed, ~11 GHz. Even if there are no circuits working at that speed today, professor Ashburn says that the technology can be used to convert numbers to digital signals. Complete circuits of this type is already used in digital cameras and scanners to improve the conversions between reality and pixels.

“There’s no Guinness Record for this but it is the fastest in the published literature”, says Professor Ashburn
