Samsung recently announced that it has developed a new intelligent mobile display driver IC (DDI) which will make it possible for displays on mobile units to offer a sharper picture in bright sunlight. What makes Samsung’s display driver circuit stand out from the rest is that it not only powers the display but also sets the brightness and saturation. Through a photo sensor the circuit can sense what environment and brightness the display is in and then alter the settings for optimal display in this precise environment. This will not only result in better picture in bright environments but also lower the power consumption as the display can automatically reduce its brightness in suitable environments.

More conkrete you could say that Samsung has made it possible for mobile units to use their displays in a more effective manner. Which is getting more and more important considering where the market is heading.

“As a broader variety of mobile handheld devices adopt mobile TV features, the intelligent mobile DDI provides optimum performance and efficiencies especially when supporting use in the outdoors.”

The new DDI circuit will hit massproduction at the end of 2006 and we’re looking forward to seeing the first units in action.
