The USA have been moving towards stricter punishments for piracy-related crimes lately and this has been clearly reflected by the last man to be convicted. A man named Nathan Peterson has namely set a new record for the longest prison sentence for a “software pirate.” The punishment was set to 7 years and restitution for $5.4 millions. Peterson has namely sold pirated software for over $20 million worth of software through his site iBackups.net. FBI started investigating the site already in 2003 and shut it down in February of 2005. The justice department has called the case one of the largest ever involving software piracy.
