Seagate has released a message to the press about a harddrive demonstration it recently performed. The demonstration was of a prototype with rarely seen storage density using perpendicular technology. The storage density of the prototype was 421 Gbit per square inch, You can compare this to the harddrives of today which has a storage density of 180 Gbit per square inch. Seagate’s harddrive prototype set a new storage density world record for magnetic harddrives with perpendicular technology. The harddrive was made with today’s equipment which Seagate means is a sign for how quick the harddrive might actually arrive on the market.
Those who want some more substance for what posibilities this opens up for the file server stuck in the closet back home Seagate has implied that harddrives with this storage density will result in harddrives with a storage capacity at 2.5TB for 3.5″ harddrives. The smaller 2.5″ harddrives will be able to reach 500GB and 1.8″ models 275GB. Seagate believes this will be possible on the ommercial market already in 2009 where 3.5″ harddrives offer 750GB at best today.
