GDDR4 is the latest generation of memory technology to find its way onto the graphics card market and even if it still just available with ATI’s X1950 series it is just a matter of time before the technology spreads to other models and price ranges. According to The Inquirer the manufacturing of Samsung’s GDDR4 memory is going like a charm and its 1GHz (2GHz DDR) chip has a close to perfect yield. This means that Samsung can further increase the manufacturing while the prices can go down and in 2007 all performance cards and many mid-range cards will use GDDR4.
The next generation of graphics circuits, ATI R600 and NVIDIA G80, are expected to use GDDR4 memory clocked at up to 2.4GHz DDR, which together with the, pressumed, new memory buses will offer incredible memory bandwidth. The switch from GDDR3 to GDDR4 has resulted in a real nice boost of memory bandwidth thanks to its high clock frequencies, which you can clearly see in our review of Radeon X1950 XTX.
