Hardware accelerated physics with games is a real boiling kettle at the moemnt and what AGEIA started with its PhysX processor has now attracted many big companies, among others graphics card giants ATI and NVIDIA. Havok is the fourth company to have shown great interest in physics acceleration and has done so by supplying, among others, NVIDIA with its HavokFX technology for handling physics acceleration. At HardOCP they’ve published an article where they’ve asked a number of questions to these four actors to see how they look on the future for physics accelaration and what we the consumers can expect the upcoming months.

Just as expected the next big step is to adapt true gameplay physics where physics acceleration really affects how you play the game. Today it’s only physical/visual effects which does not add the same feeling as gameplay physics has potential of. But they also seem to agree on that also regular physical effects has a lot more to offer, we just have to wait for games taking greater advantage of the technology. Interesting reading for those who wants to know more about the future of physics acceleration with PC games.
