AGEIA recently announced that it has found a manufacturer for its physics processor PhysX (PPU), I.e. ASUS and now they have posted an approximate price for the expansion cards that will be based on teh coming circuit. Cards with AGEIA’s PhysX processor will produced during the third quarter of 2005 and is expected to reach the shelves during the fourth quarter and arrive somewhere between 249 and 299 dollar. Thus this is an expansion card that is far from a necessity and to begin with will have very little software support. In our latest report on PhysX we were very positive to the effects of dedicated PPU would give, which we still are. But at a sprice close to $300 it feels like the card has a lot to prove for anyone to pay up. Considering you can get a quite good graphic card for the same amount of money. Now it only remains to see what effect AGEIA’s PhysX processor will have on games. Source: X-bit Labs
