AM2 DDR2 vs. 939 DDR benchmarks

Socket AM2 is only six weeks away and AMD’s big platform launch is witohut a doubt one of the biggest events this summer. At Anandtech they’ve continued to investigate the platform despite that it has not been officially launched yet and now they have published an article that take a closer look at the diffferent memory technologies used and how the memory controller inside of the Socket AM2 and Socket 939 processors perform during different circumstances. With an updated BIOS for its test platform they managed to lower the latencies for Socket AM2 and one of the conclusions is that latency is, how fast the system can access the memory, is not a problem with DDR2 at 800MHz, which has earlier been an Achilles’ heal because of the worse latencies. At the same time AMD’s processors are relatively uninterested in increased memory bandwidth, which reduce the new platform considerably.

Socket AM2 seems to offer a bit better performance than the Socket 939 platform of today, but the higher bandwidth of DDR2 doesn’t seem to be the real answer to Intel’s next generation processor series that in turn seems to able to put up a fierce fight against AMD’s DDR2 processors.
