AMD is said to be preparing the first unlocked Llano APU. AMD A8-3870 is supposedly the name of the first unlocked model that will launch in Q4 2011 and bring better overclocking and most likely also a higher stock clock over 3.0 GHz.
AMD A8-3870 is not a replacement for the praised flagship A8-3850. The processors will be sold next to each other and AMD will broaden its mid-range family with a more enthusiast friendly APU. The clock frequency is still unconfirmed but wil most likely be turned up another 200 MHz to 3.1 GHz while the unlocked multiplier will make it easier to overclock the processor.
Overclocking of the A8-3850 is limited by the bus frequencies of the Socket FM1 platform. A problem that should go away with AMD A8-3870.
How and if the GPU is affected by the unlocked multiplier remains to be seen, but hopefully there will be separate GPU overclocking in the future.
