It seems that AMD has layed their hands on a team of designers (former SUN employees). Since SUN recently cancelled two CPU projects they were more or less available, quote David Rich: “We wanted to have more design groups. So we decided to make the Boston site a real (processor design) site because of the talent that’s in the area.”
“The chipmaker now has five PC and server processor design teams of varying sizes. A sixth team works on non-PC chips, such as the Geode for set-top boxes and industrial handhelds.”
Adding up with their multicore CPUs it looks like AMSD is really on the move. We can only wait and see what this new team will bring us in the future.
