It has been rumored that high executives at AMD and Dell have been having meetings at Michael Dell’s villa in Austin, Texas, to discuss and finish its future cooperation, which has already started through Dell’s announcement of its Opteron-based four-way servers. The cooperation that was discussed in Texas is suppose to stretch even further than that and will happen within a relatively near future. According to The Inquirer Dell and AMD is planning on launching several new series of products covering everything from desktop systems to laptops and workstations with AMD’s processor platforms. They aim to market the new AMD-based systems before the school starts this fall which leaves them with only two months to prepare.

The reasons for Dell to continue to broaden its cooperation with AMD despite Intel’s expected success with the coming Core archkitecture is mainly because of availability. Dell is afraid to be shadowed by Apple and Lenovo and get a poor supply of Intel’s new processor models, which would result in great problems if it would be unable to deliver before the hectic school start.

“Dell can get Conroes and a great share of WoodCrests and take a ticket to stand in line for Meroms, which are scheduled to be split between Apple and Lenovo. No other manufacturer will get anywhere near the volumes of these two, and Dell just does not like to be on a short leash. Especially if it spends valuable TV air-time and paper ads on products that look likely to be put on a back-order.”
