It may seem weird that both of them actually gain marketshares, but during the third quarter of 2004 both AMD and Intel increased their marketshares on the PC-processormarket.
Intel increased its shares to 82.2 untis from 82.0, while AMD increased theirs with 0.6 units to 16.6.

The big losers were VIA and Transmeta, both losing considerably large amount of their shares. As of today they hold about 1 percentage of the market.
Transmeta has also announced they will be needing a partner to be able to continue to produce their chips.

AMD was able to gain the most, but it was still a pretty slim increase.

“Nonetheless, AMD continued to chisel small gains at the expense of Intel. At 16.6 percent, the company has its largest quarterly market share in the past eight quarters, according to Mercury’s Dean McCarron. In the fourth quarter of last year, Intel had an 83.7 percent market share, compared with AMD’s 14.7 percent share.”

Although AMD’s gain was more or less all thanks to the succesful launch of their Sempron-processorers, which unfortunately does not bring in the same money that the more expensive Athlon 64-series.
