AMD goes for new SOI-cache memory

0

Innovative Silicon Inc. is the name of the company that made AMD open their wallet by offering something they call Z-RAM. The name stands for “zero capacitator”, which quite simply means what it says, a memory technology without capacitators. Z-RAM utilizes SOI processing technology which fits AMD perfectly as its a technology they use in all their new CPU’s. The main benefit with Z-RAM is the density of the memory, it should be able to pack five times as much as the normal Embedded SRAM. This means theoretically that you would be abled to fit a Athlon 64 X2-CPU with 2x5MB L2 cache (compared to todays 2x1MB), without the need of a bigger circuit. AMD hasn’t stated how early they are moving on to Z-RAM but we are curious to see what the new technology brings to the table.
