If anyone wonders why AMD has been struggling for years to get a foot in at the world’s largest PC builder, Dell, we now have the answer in clear text. From not having a single AMD processor in its assortment Dell will use over 20 million AMD processors during the period Q42006 to Q4 2007. The processors will distributed so that 4 million will appear in notebook PCs while the remaining 16 million will be used in servers and desktop system. If this unconfirmed informated is correct AMD will make up a third of the processors in Dell’s computer systems. A quite impressive development for AMD.

Now it seems though as AMD may get problems with availability and that OEM manufacturers will be more important than the retail market. Something that could mean that it will be more difficult to get a hold of AMD’s processors in retail stores. None of this has been confirmed by either AMD nor Dell, but if this would turn out to be true it’s not hard to understand how much Dell means to AMD.
