AMD released a press release yesterday where it presented what it calls the Next Generation Opterons; Opteron 1000, and with this we can see plans for Quad-core Opterons and from what it seems we will see demonstations of these already this year, I.e. if everything goes as planned. Intel has already said it will launch Quad-core this year and AMD will of course do everything it can to show that it is still in the race. This could of course mean that we should be able to expect a launch in the middle of, or the later part of 2007. The new Opteron models will be pin-compatible with the older Opterons, which means that they will use AMD’s DDR2 platforms Socket F and Socket AM2, the first for ECC/REG memories and multiple processors and the second for unbuffered single-system.

The new models will like the older be available for single-processor, duo-processor and octo-processor systems and the prices for the first models can be seen below.

The prices are of course when ordering 1,000 units and as you can see the names are a bit different than you’re perhaps used to and the new names work like this; the first is for how many CPUs you can use in one system, the second for what generation it is and the last two for the performance; XX18 will run at 2.6GHz while XX20 will runs 2.8GHz. The regular models have a TDP at 95W (except 1XXX at 103W), while the performance models SE has a slighty higher value at 120W (125W for 1XXX).
