AMD is preparing one of the most important desktop launches in many years as its upcoming Phenom X4 processor series is about to go up against Intel’s Core and Penryn architectures. Whether the new K10 processor will be able to measure up remains to be seen, but it’s at least clear that AMD will return to its roots and once again target the enthusiasts and and overclockers. At Expreview they’ve namely published information about a new application that AMD has developed for its processors where you can change clock frequencies and other parameters directly in Windows.
The things that makes AMD OverDrive extra interesting is that you will actually be able to set four different clock frequencies for the four individual cores of a Phenom X4 processor. This opens up whole new possibilities for optimizing the performance and power consumption. Exactly which settings that will be allowed remains to be revealed, but AMD has certainly decided to take processor overclocking one step further.
