AMD has had the upper hand with its K8-architecture, but when Intel announced its coming microprocessor architecture during IDF a few months ago it looked like 2006 would be a though year for AMD. Despite this we didn’t hear anything from AMD who continued to push for that it still had the best processorarchitecture on the market and would still have in the future. Now we have finally gotten some more information about AMD’s plans for the future. AMD’s VP Phil Hester has namely spoken at a pressconference at the opening of its new plant in Dredsen, Fab36, about its plans for the future.
The information released wasn’t about a new architecture but more of what we are likely to see in the future with AMD’s processors. It has chosen to lay out the plans as follows, today, soon to come and future goals. Some of the interesting information under “soon to come” was multi-core architectures and support for DDR3-memory. But there are a lot of other technologies that are looking very promising, now it remains to see when “soon” really is. E.g. DDR3-memory will most likely not arrive during 2006 considering AMD will move on to DDR2 at the beginning of next year. Some very interesting reading at Anandtech which have reported from AMD’s Dresden-plant.
