AMD released its Opteron 1000 series some time ago and with it came the first official plans for a Quad-core processor from AMD. HardOCP has now published slides from a presentation by AMD that brings up Quad-core, but from a consumer perspective. The first Quad-core will be a new Athlon FX, just as Intel has chosen to do, and some of the highlights with this processor will be AMD’s 65nm SOI manufacturing process, better IPC and a new cache structure with a shared L3 cache. Each core will also work individually when it comes to the power consumption and can be downclocked without affecting the others.
