AMD planned to launch a new flagship for graphics cards in December 2010. Under the code-name Antilles the card would bring dual Cayman ciricuits and be called Radeon HD 6990, but AMD had to postpone the launch and we now finally have a glimpse of the card from pictures published online.
AMD Radeon HD 6990 will be the successor to Radeon HD 5970 that in 2009 launched with two Cypress graphics circuits and still is that fastest card around. With the latest Northern Islands archtiecture AMD was planning a new flagship with dual GPUs, but even if we don’t know exactly whenr the card will launch it looks like it’s not far away now.
During a presentation AMD representives presented the coming graphics card and even if the pictures aren’t very revealing or high resolution we can see that the card comes with two graphics circuits and has a cooler similar to the other cards of the Radeon HD 6000 family.
The cooler looks to get a central fan, and two power connectors placed facing up. It’s a bit hard t interpret the connectors, but most likely we’re dealing with two 8-pin power connectors for powering this beast.
Specifications, launch date and pricing were not discussed, but according to sources to NordicHardware AMD will soon decide the date for sending out test cards, which does sound promising.
