Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is the flagship product at AMD but to reach the frequency of 3.46GHz it had to make some sacrifices. The power envelope broke the 125W barrier and had to be labeled as 140W. This is in no way flattering for AMD, so much that it is evidently planning to launch a new version in Q4 2009.
It’s still a bit high with a TDP rating of 125W, but this moves the top model back in line with the other performance processors from AMD, in terms of power consumption.
Currently, Intel has no processors with TDPs rated above 125W and right now AMD is hoping to get its 32nm technology ready for business as soon as possible to once again push performance upward without increasing power drainage.
