Fusion is AMD’s way of joining CPU and GPU in the same circuit. The first so called APU chips was slated for early 2011, but now it seems AMD is aiming to deliver the first Fusion chips in 2010 already. VP Dirk Meyer has, according to spokesperson Bob Grim, announced to partners that it will be shipping the first Fusion products this year.
Fusion is the first processor from AMD with an integrated GPU and unlike Intel’s Clarkdale architecture that use two separate dies in a single package, Fusion will join the two circuits on a silicon level.
AMD will with Fusion and the Llano architecture transition to the 32 node, which together with a truly integrated architecture will offer great leaps in performance and power consumption.
Intel will launch its first native CPU/GPU processors starting next year and AMD hopes to beat the Sandy Bridge launch.
