AMD has been using videos with overclocked Phenom II processors for marketing quite frequently. This kind of marketing is becoming all the more common, with video demos being posted at sites like YouTube. AMD has once again posted an overclocking video where the Dragon platform and overclocker Brian “Chew” McLachlan push AMD’s Phenom II X4 955 CPU and Radeon HD 4890 graphics card. Several of the results are quite impressive, one of them being the frequency overclock of the processor with just air cooling.

Even if it doesn’t say the ambient temperatures Chew managed to hit 4.5GHz in Windows. By the looks of it the processor runs at 25 degrees Celsius with 1.425V, which means the air has to be a lot cooler than your average room. It at least shows that AMD’s Phenom II processor can do over 4GHz, with margin to spare, even with simpler cooling.

Using dry ice and liquid nitrogen Chew takes the processor over both 5 and 6GHz, but wasn’t able to threaten the record of close to 6.7GHz. The claimed overclocks over 7GHz has been retracted. Below is the video in question;
