AMD has just as Intel big plans for 2006, but instead of launching a new processor architecture it will launch a new platform, Socket AM2. We have reported about AM2 at numerous occasions and this will be the first time AMD supports DDR2. It will also transfer its entire desktop family, from budget to high end, to the new platform. Something that should make it easier for system builders and consumers to upgrade. At DailyTech they’ve come across roadmaps for AMD’s Socket AM2 desktop processors and it is pretty clear that it is “going all in”. Socket AM2 will be launched on June 6 2006, (6-6-6), and about 15 processors at the same time. Among others we will see a number of models with extra low power consumption, to work well with Microsoft’s coming Media Center certification that requires processors that can be cooled at 30 dBA or less. :: A complete list of the new Socket AM2 processors can be found at DailyTech.
