AMD Turion 64 in a desktop computer

Small preview imageTurion 64 is AMD’s answer to Intel’s Pentium M processor, both are intended for the mobile market with high performance at a low power consumption. Pentium M was the first to arrive and has been very popular, not just with laptop but also with stationary computers lately. There are systems that has a lot to gain from a power effective processor even if they don’t require a battery to run, simply because more power equals more heat. HTPC systems is a great example for this as they have to be very quiet, something that doesn’t work very well with high power consuming processors. At SilentPCReview they’ve tested how Turion 64 handles in a desktop environment and what you have to do to make it work.

Despite what might look like an easy task, since Turion 64 use AMD’s Socket 754 platform, it turned out that it wasn’t quite as simple as one might have thought. But when they finally got the system running they did several interesting tests measuring power consumptions and comparing it to Intel’s Pentium M and AMD’s Athlon 64 series. A very interesting article for those who are thinking about building a Turion 64 platform.
