AMD and French company Optis has started to work on a more physically exact and realistic rendering engine based on raytracing. The solution that the two are developing together will use the framework OpenCL and AMD’s GPU technology with the goal that it will work with all of the latest graphics cards of the professional FirePro series.
Optis is a company that was founded in 1989 in Toulon, France, with focus on developing software solutions for rendering objects in realtime. Its main product, Speos, is a physics based rendering tool compatible with CATIA V5, SolidWorks and PTC Creo Elements/Pro (previously ProEngineering). Optis currently has over 1,600 companies as clients, including giants in automotive, aeronautics and electronics that all use their software to review a product in detail before starting manufacturing.
The new cooperation between AMD and Optis will use OpenCL in Opti’s software, while Optis will get early access to AMD’s new graphics cards to certify and optimize the graphics architecture for its software. AMD and Optis says that the new partnership is the fruit of a three year long cooperation on the research and development front. They say that now the greatest challenge will be to develop unique physics-based real-time rendering technology that stands out.

While the cooperation with Optis is one of the bigger wins in a long time for AMD on the professional market, where NVIDIA dominates, it is hard to say if this will affect the gaming market up ahead, and how it will implement raytracing. The technology can create mighty impressive graphics, but is also extremely demanding.
