DRAM module manufacturers can be quite ingenious from time to times. Apacer is one of them and its latest flagship product, Aeolus DDR3-1800, comes with a new heatspreader that has the fan built-in to the heatsink. Active cooling of the memory isn’t exactly news, but putting the fan inside the heatsink is really taking it one step further. The heatsink was designed from the ground up, not only to implement the fan but to improve cooling overall. The heatsink uses a two-layer design and Apacer claims up to 70% better heat removal than conventional heatspreaders. Alas, the height could pose a problem for some.

Apacer has managed to keep the timings tight though, 7-7-7-20 at 1800MHz is more than acceptable when the operating voltage is set at 1.9V. Apacer has also launched a 1600MHz kit using the same heatsink and specifications, with the exception of lower frequency and operating voltage, 1.8V. The modules are sold in kits of 2x1GB and are covered by a lifetime warranty.
