Apple cares little for netbooks, but not entirely uninterested

Apple is covering the computer market fairly well with its family of Mac computers. Everything from stationary models to powerful or thin notebooks are offered. But what it lacks is an equivalent to the PC netbook. In other words, a cheap and power efficient computer in a small format. Apple has given the netbook the cold hand on earlier occasions and during an analyst Q&A Tim Cook, Steve Jobs temporary replacement, painted a more detailed picture of what Apple thinks of netbooks.

Cook said that it is not interested in delivering a product with poor performance, bad software and shrunk keyboards, which is a pretty harsh reduction of the netbook market as a whole. At the same time he added the following;

“We’ve got some ideas, but we will not provide the inferior experience that we believe other companies are providing”.

It’s near impossible to say what he meant by that, but all in all we can only conclude that Apple has a lukewarm interest at best for the fast growing netbook portion of the notebook market.

Other questions touched on iPhone and the emerging competition from Google Android and Palm Pre. Apple seems very confident there, but at the same time somewhat annoyed that others are borrowing a bit much from Apple. This will not be tolerated he added.
