Apple seems to be giving full support for the next generation optical formats through both HD DVD and Blu-ray with its next operating system Mac OS X 10.5 “Leopard”. This information is based on the fact that Apple’s video editing tool, Final Cut Studio, will be updated soon to support both of the high-res formats. This should indicate a hardware launch at the start of next year. Apple has since earlier shown its support for Blu-ray but now it seems that it will also support the rivaling format HD DVD, which may be wise considering we don’t know what format that will dominate.
Whether it is going for a dual-format unit for reading the formats or that it will now use both of the 5.25″ slots of the new Mac Pro remains to see. This is of course not official information, but sure sounds feasible for Apple to open up for HD DVD.
