Many remember ASUS ARES and MARS for their dual GPUs with high clock frequencies and power consumption. This time ASUS looks to have outdone themselves with MARS II where it has used two fully activated GF110 GPUs from GTX 580 and GTX 590, but with clock frequencies from the former.
ASUS MARS II will just like a regular GTX 590 sport two GF110 GPUs with all 512 CUDA cores active, but unlike GTX 590 the card from ASUS will sport the same clocks as GTX 580. This a configuration that will consume a lot of power, which is also why it has three 8-pin PCI-E power connectors, which in theory enables up to 525W according to the ATX standard. The new card is expected to ship with 3 GB GDDR5 memory, which is a bit disappointing since we have seen 6 GB (3GB per GPU) in cards of this caliber.
Considering the extreme power consumption we expect, it is in great need of cooling. The card looks to be as long as HD 5970 but wider and under the red and black Republic of Gamers case we see a number of tightly packed aluminum heatsinks and coupled heatpipes. We don’t know exactly when the card launches, but it will most likely be topping the performance charts when it does.
