It seems like ASUS isn’t entirely happy with the sales of the stationary nettop Eee Box. The computer is more or less a desktop version of the mobile Eee PC netbook with the same basic features and Intel Atom processor under the hood. The idea was to create a small, cheap and energy efficient computer powerful enough to run your everyday applications. ASUS will try to raise the appeal of its nettop by introducing a well known name in the family, namely Celeron.
Those of you who were around for the glory days of Celeron knows it was a processor known for its low price and high overclocking potential. Unfortunately the good reputation of Celeron was dragged through the mud for many years and has left it with little shine left. Even though it lacks multi-threading (Atom sports HyperThreading) Celeron 220 (1.2GHz) is supposed to be noticeably faster than Atom (1.6GHz), while the higher energy consumption doesn’t really matter here.
ASUS has also decided to increase the storage to 120GB from 80GB and lower the price with around 20% which should all in all result in a few more sold units. When the new Eee Box model will appear is uncertain.
