ASUS XG Station – External graphics card for your laptop

ASUS XG Station is a very interesting and as far as we know a certainly unique solution for laptops. The concept is based on the fact that laptops often have limited possibilities when it comes to graphical performance. XG Station is namely nothing but an external graphics card unit into which you can install any PCI Express X16 graphics card and then connect to your laptop through the ExpressCard slot. This makes it possible for systems with worse graphics circuits take advantage of real performance when needed.

The system has been developed so that you have to use an external monitor, which cripples some of the usability. But at the same time there is certainly those who are seeing the possibility to “upgrade” their laptops’ graphical performance when you use the system at home. This is clearly an interesting concept on paper and now we’re just waiting to see what the first reviews of XG Station will say when the unit arrives during the second quarter.

“ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS), the leading provider of high-performance graphics solutions, today launched the XG Station as the industry’s first public demonstration of the world’s first external graphics card station for notebook computers. Equipped with Express Card interface, USB 2.0 and Dolby headphones, the XG station seamlessly integrates notebook computing with PC graphics power.”
