Athlon 64 FX-57: The last mohikan

Athlon 64 FX-57 is from now on AMD’s flagship on the single core market. Already before the launch of Athlon 64 X2, AMD’s first processorseries with dual cores, AMD announced that its FX-series would be the optimum choice for serious gamers. Simply because most games lack support for multithreading. I.e. a second core core will not give you any extra performance in these cases. Thus AMD has now launched the seuqel to Athlon 64 FX-55 and the differences aren’t exactly overwhelming, but there are some news worth mentioning.

First of all FX-57 works at a higher at a higher frequency than its precedor, 2.8GHz compared to 2.6GHz with the FX-55. To a K8-processor 2.8GHz is impressive at stock, the least to say . But there is more to it, FX-57 is namely based on the new San Diego-core. I.e. 90nm technology and new optimizations in the memory controller and similar. Something that should give it a an advantage over the FX-55 even at the same speed. Although the latter has started to show up with a San Diego-core, but that is a very rare sight.

AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 is without a doubt the fastest single core processor on the market, when it comes to gaming we’re talking total domination. But to motivate a purchase when the price is staggering at $1000 … that is hard. If you want to give it a shot you can read through the reviews below that has appeared during the day. The question is whether this is the last FX-processor we will see, as we are used to seeing them. We pressume AMD is venturing toward dual core and the question is what will it do with the single core-series.
