Catalyst 6.4 is the fourth official driver update by ATI this year and it seems that it has tuned both the 2D and 3D support with its latest drivers. They’ve managed to get more performance out of games such as Far Cry, Half Life 2, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Call of Duty 2. These are quite marginal at 1-5% and it’s only with the X1K family, which most likely means these are memory optimizations. Also 3Dmark06 will get noticeably better performance, up to 4.9%. It has also targeted the X1K family’s Avivo functionality that handle the video playback with everything from HD material to DVD movies. These optimizations are mainly for standard definition material. At the same time; NGO has released Catalyst 6.4 with the classic control panel as many of their users have been requesting the old interface back.
“Improvements have been made to the Avivo video processing engine during standard definition (SD) video playback. Edge enhancement or sharpening effectively improves image quality by enhancing details lost during encoding and processing. Noise reduction algorithms are improved to ensure original detail is preserved, while removing unwanted noise.”
