CrossFire is as you should know by now ATi’s longed answer to nVidia’s dual-gpu technology SLI and it has been delayed for long for unknown reasons. We have been waiting for some real CrossFire performance tests and now it seems our prayers have been answered. The guys at Anandtech has namely been able to acquire both a mainboard and CrossFire-Master card from Gigabyte and put together a whole bunch of tests with these pre-production units. These are no retail-products and this is quite clear as the CrossFire-system works far from flawless. Among others there were some big problems with antialiasing in several tests but they manage to achieve some quite interesting results. ATi is in a really tight spot right now since nVidia is at least half a generation ahead with its 7800-series but a CrossFire setup with dual X850 XTs performs really well and gives some really nice increases in certain games. ATi still has some work to do, that is quite clear, but the potential is there, without a doubt. “The bottom line is that CrossFire is a success in implementation. We are impressed with the performance of the solution, especially considering the very early hardware and software that we have our hands on here. When a final solution is released, we will be doing a much more in-depth performance and image quality analysis of the hardware, but at this point, we just want to get a solid idea about what to expect. And right now, we expect exciting things for ATI.”
